About This Image

This is a Monarch butterfly with a teasel floret stuck to her proboscis. Apparently the florets are not very solidly attached to the teasel flowerhead, and pull away easily. This butterfly repeatedly got stuck in the florets, pulled them out, and had to fly away a foot or two before before getting loose from the floret and dropping it midair. The butterfly would then immediately return to a flowerhead for more; it must have been worth the effort.
