About This Image

MSC Texas, one of the largest container ships in the world, leaves the Port of Oakland, headed for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and points beyond.

The MSC Texas is a 8,200 TEU (twenty-foot- equivalent-unit) ship is owned by MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) a Swiss based enterprise. 30 feet too wide to fit through the Panama Canal, this ship generally traverses the Pacific to carry goods between China and the US.

The ship is so large it can carry containers stacked 17 across and 8 deep above deck. The ship is longer than 3 football fields (1096 ft). It is estimated that the containers on this ship carry enough goods to completely outfit a large million square foot regional shopping center with its complete array of products.

As far as I know this ship calls on Long Beach, Oakland, and the Chinese ports of Hong Kong, Chiwan, Xiamen and Yantian. It could go to other ports, but none that are publically documented. From what I read there are only one or two other container ships currently larger in size. However, larger ones are always being built, and in perhaps a decade even this new "Megaship" will be obsolete.

great shot, Alex, with the Bridge in the background. And very interesting too, hearing all about the size of the ship and it's capacity. Incredible! Wondering if it ever comes up to the Point Roberts container port, near us?
