Last yr (late fall) we had about 5 male and female yellow finches and were thrilled to see them in Arkansas! This year we have already had about 20 pairs (just in the past 3 days). Are they strictly a migratory bird for this part of the country(Arkansas) as we don't see them often and they don't seem to stay long. We are hoping they stay longer this year as we love the beautiful color and their actions. I remember as a child seeing them, but never in my adult years. It seems they have come in with the cardinals and purple finches this year. They are definitely a bird that brings a smile to our face.

I agree with the others. The yellow color is very nice.

What was your ISO? The composition is excellent, but there's a granular texture which leads me to believe that the ISO was very high unless resolution was lost in a conversion. Coloration is stunning.

I was Taking my daughter out test driving and we saw one of the yellow finch birds here in Parsippany, NJ. what a pretty yellow color it has with the black stripe going across the wing. Im didn't think these type of birds would be around here. hope we see more in the future. I think i'm going to put a feeder in my backyard.

Absolutely breathtaking. I have a question I HOPE someone can answer. We have six hummingbird feeders and have about 40 hummers in our front/back yards at any given time. However, in the past two weeks, we have noticed two male finches drinking from the feeders! We've fed them seed before but I've never seen anything like this before in my life. Finches drinking Hummingbird sugar water?? Has anyone else ever seen this happen and, if so, would anyone have an explanation for it? I'm just astounded. They are SO extraordinarily beautiful. A bit more info. -- we live in Calif. on the Central Coast. Thanks to anyone who can solve this puzzle for me.

Ellen Saxton from Iowa was asking if the goldfinches change feather colour in the winter and look like sparrows. I used to think they left each winter too, then realized that they change colours and it's easy to confuse them with sparrows at that time. Then when spring comes, the male goldfinches get their bright yellow feathers for the mating time, and the females are a dull greenish/yellow colour.

Alandrapal from Canada on May 30, 2008 at 3:05 AM said:

Sharon from Saint Peters MO was asking about a small yellow bird with only a black stripe on its head, about 3 inches long. Am wondering if maybe this might be a warbler? We get Wilson's Warblers in our area, and they look a bit like the goldfinches, but smaller and without the black & white on their wings, but they do have a black mark on their crowns.

A stunningly beautiful Goldfinch! Its black and white wing feathers really set off its magnificent shining beauty!! What gifts we are surrounded by!

A beautiful pair of yellow finches have been visiting my purple coneflowers this whole summer. I have not seen them here in years. I have let the purple coneflowers 'over take' an area of my garden, just so they keep coming back for ample seed. Today was the first I heard their wonderful song. At first I didn't know what the 'racket' was about, but think that since I had my sprinkler on the area with the coneflowers, they were singing with delight as I watched them 'play' in the water, (at least that's what I want to believe) Their song lasted for a good 15 minutes! What a beautiful bird.

do the yellow finch go south in the winter or just change feather colors to look like a smal sparrow

I live on a chain of lakes bordering Wisconsin and Upper Michigan and we have had lots of hummingbirds all summer long and several finches as well.We have a few Pine trees in our yard next to the lake and the birds love it!! I have a bird feeder outside on my porch and put sunflower seeds in it. The finches love it. I noticed the yellow finches last month or so. They were very small.

I have an extensive garden of purple coneflowers. I did not get around to dead heading the flowers, and I am so glad I did not! I arrived home around 6PM today, and discovered a dozen yellow finches eating the seeds from the purple coneflowers. So, this year I see yellow finches, but only 1 hummingbird. We've had extremely hot, humid, and hazy DC weather. We had no rain all summer until a week ago.

I planted sunflower plants and noticed alot of yellow birds. I checked out the web and noticed that they were yellow finches.

Is it normal to have about 50 yellow finches in one area and where do they go for the winter

This morning while looking outside I saw two very small birds. I would guess they were only about three inches long, infact I thought they were dandelions until I saw them move. They were all yellow accept for a small black streak on their crown. Can anyone tell me if they were indeed a yellow finch?

I just saw a yellow finch for the first time, brilliant yellow coloring, eating the seeds from my gallardia. And to think, I was about to dead-head the gallardia for more blooms! I would have missed out on this wonderful experience. Too quickly we want to dead-head the "ugly" seed heads off of our flowers for more blooms, and we forget that this can be important food for our feathered friends! Never again!

Your photo of the yellow finch is outstanding. We have had yellow finches in our yard for the past few years. Our greatest delight yet is one of the birds has befriended us and sits on our windows watching us all day long, which ever room we happen to be in she will fly to that window to watch us. I purchased a yellow finch feeder and am curious to see the results.
