About This Image

'Garden Tiger' 50-80mm; Extremely variable in size and also in wing pattern, with the dark markings sometimes linking up and sometimes almost absent. The hind wing may be orange instead of yellow. It flies July-August and is common all over Europe.
Caterpillar; reaches 60mm in length and is commonly known as a 'woolly bear' because of its dense fur coat, made up of long black hairs with white tips and short brown hairs.
Most of the 'Tiger Moths' are brightly coloured and very hairy, a warning to birds that they are distasteful.
