About This Image

We ran across this "sundog", or parhelion this afternoon, and fortunately had the camera along. The sun is to the left; the sundog had a much fainter mate on the other side of the sun. These are always formed 22 degrees from the sun's position, and are caused by refraction through ice crystals in thin cirrus clouds. I did some adjustments (levels and saturation) to enhance the image, but it's basically as we saw it.

This is so lovely and the sundog so beautiful it surely must be a glimpse of Faery Land. *g* What a wonderfully beautiful picture you shared with the rest of us. And the darker solid tops of the tree tops at bottom of picture was absolutely perfect for setting off the elusive Sun Dog. Wonderful Picture.

Very nice sundog capture, and a good explanation of it too. Nice work. Don
