About This Image

A mare and skewbald foal, who was not many days old.
I came across these ponies whilst driving across Dartmoor, in Devon.
Dartmoor is a National Park and the ponies lead a feral life, roaming wherever they please.
Because of the extreme weather conditions experienced on the moors, the Dartmoor is a particularly hardy breed with excellent stamina. Over the centuries it has been used as a working animal by local tin miners and quarry workers.

Thanks for commenting Alandra and Mary. Am glad you enjoyed this shot of the ponies. I thought the foal's colouring was unusual; I've seen skewbald ponies before but only thought they were white with brown markings - didn't realise that this colour was also known as skewbald. :)

A sweet candid of the ponies Jas. The larger image shows them off so much better.

Thank you Carol, Golda and Whittler for the nice comments you've all made here. Golda, there is a story to the rock walls on Dartmoor: there is a prison set in the middle of the moor, at Princetown, and many years ago, the guards would take the prisoners out on to the moor and they would build and repair the walls out there. There was never much fear that the prisoners would escape, due to the bleak weather conditions there but if they did, they would soon be recaptured. Thanks for looking. :)
