Apparently, it's illegal to raise & keep these birds in some areas of the USA. (read this online)

I also was given 2 of these pretty birds as pets when I was 7 or 8. If I recall correctly, they were very skittish and could not be tamed but everyone had them.

my first bird,age 5 late 1950's,petey-ringo-o,dang bird woke me up at the crack of dawn,me mum bought him at a 5&10 store in cleveland,oh,she bought the cage at a thrift shop in cleveland for .50 ,the bird, .75 .this was 1959,like ol yeller,best darn bird in the ....

I have been breeding birds for over 25 years. my all time is the java. That is a beautiful picture you have. Excatly how they look.

Beautifully captured color and detail. I remember seeing these in pet stores when I was young. They must damage crops to be banned in parts of the US.

thanks Beverly, - this bird seemed to have a "rosy glow", very appealing. Perhaps he heard the click of the camera, but it was quite noisy in there, with fans etc and birds hollering : ) - half the time I couldn't hear the "focus beep" to let me know if the shot was in focus or not : )
