About This Image

beautiful scented Hyacinths growing in a planter outside a storefront at Steveston, B.C. Canada this afternoon.

At this time of year, these flowers and this verse always come to mind:

If of thy mortal goods thou art bereft,
and from thy slender store
Two loaves alone to thee are left,
Sell one, and with the dole
Buy Hyacinths to feed thy Soul.

Vincent Price quoted the poem to Julie in an episode of The Mod Squad- I have remembered it for years!

Feeding the soul~

I've loved hyacinths & this verse forever but never knew the last verse of the poem nor where it originated. Thank you so much!! Can't wait for my deep blue hyacinths to emerge from the soil!!

hyacinths poem

finish the poem.... But not alone does beauty bide where bloom and tint and fragrance hide; the minstrel's melody may feed perhaps a more insistent need. But even beauty howe'er blent to ear or ey, fails to content Only the heart - with love afire Can satisfy the soul's desire And now you know....the rest of the story!

Complete poem as shown above & where can I find it?

thankyou Anne, am happy you enjoyed the image and the verse. I love the scent of the hyacinths and especially the blue coloured variety, like these.

Both photo and verse are given to show beauty. Done very well.

thanks Elle from Kansas for taking time to leave nice comments. Also enjoyed your recollection of the verse. I just got my version from an online site, - am sure there are different versions. As you say, I also like to see them all, and do love hyacinths.

I seem to recall the poem as follows: "If thou a fortune should be bereft and in thy store there be but left two loaves- sell one and with the dole buy Hyacinths to feed thy soul" I heard it on an episode of "Mod Squad" many years back...! Not sure if my memory is bad or just a slightly different interpretation was used. At any rate, great pic and I still love the poetry.

thankyou for leaving the comment, Lynne from CA. Coincidental, as I was just thinking of this verse and photo last night, realizing it was a year ago that I submitted it to the gallery here : ) For some reason I think of that verse every year at this time. What a nice gesture to give the verse and hyacinths to the teachers.

The poem written by Saadi, I feel in love with first. I remember Vincent Price quoting it in some ancient movie. Each of my daughter's teachers received a blooming red hyacinth and a copy of this poem as a gift for St. Valentine's Day.

thankyou, Mawma, happy you like it, and as you say, the fragrance is wonderful. Am getting confused now, re the nicknames onlist, are you Joanne?

Absolutely beautiful. One of my most favorite flowers, and I can almost smell the fragrance of it.
Guest - Sep 26, 2005 12:00 PM EDT
thanks Vince, happy you like the verse also. Yep, I think the other flowers are "bluebells", the leaves are similar. Was thinking of you last night, as read a pleasant item about scenes of a bluebell wood, in an ancient Girls Own Annual.

well, Mary Lou, thank YOU! for the kind and generous comments on my photos. Am happy the verse means something to you also, - have also enjoyed it since first seeing it many years ago. Would like to have seen the needlework that you made, with the hyacinths & verse featured. Would you like an email copy of this photo? - a clearer version I mean, before compression here at the group? I'll be happy to send you one by email, as a gift, if you send me your email address.

Some years ago I saw that saying and really liked it. I designed a stitchery with hyacinths and that poem and gave it to a friend. I think it was during a starving student stage and it just struck me that is was the perfect picture of good self-care. Thank you!
