A sealion raises its head above water at San Francisco's Pier 39. The cut on the face is one of the many wounds that most of these wild animals sport.

I wouldn't know how this sea lion got the wound, but fighting would be my first guess. I saw this sea lion and another sparring a bit prior to this shot. I am sure he did not get the wound from that encounter however.
