About This Image

great blue heron gathering twigs for its nest. About 5 minutes from where we live, there's a huge colony/rookery of nesting great blue herons, and there are some bald eagle pairs nesting there also.

Mary, thankyou for the nice comments. I have only just found them. We do enjoy visiting the heron rookery and feel lucky that it's so close to home, as it's very entertaining to watch the herons and the various rituals they have. I don't use a tripod, so all my photos are hand held.

Hi, This is DeeMarie, Dee for short and I did in fact join thelensflare but have not had time to upload images or update my profile as yet. Your photograph of the great Blue Heron is very well captured and so beautiful. Dee

Great capture Alandra. How lucky can you get with the rookery so close to home! Did you hand hold or use a tripod?

Hi Wilma, great to see you here, many thanks for taking time to leave a nice comment. Yes, we are very happy to have the herons nesting so close to home, - it's fun to drop by there and watch them, carrying the twigs to their nests, etc.

Perfectly beautiful and the bonus is that they are so close to you.

thanks May for the nice comments, good to see you here again :) Yes, we do feel lucky having this huge colony just a few minutes away. People from "all over" come here to see them. However, they build their nests high up on the cliff side, so it's hard to get a good close shot of them. However, I found a place where they sometimes get nearer the ground, and that's where I got this image.

Alandra - what a great shot. And a whole colony nearby? Wow. How lucky can you get?

thanks to Carol, Alan, Janice, Claudia, Beverly for the nice comments. Claudia, I think that twig has just been broken off by the heron, - we were there again this afternoon, and could hear them snapping the branches and twigs off. They were also going down onto the ground of that part of the bluff and picking up bits from underneath the trees and flying off with it in their huge beaks. I keep hoping to capture a good image of one flying away with a load of twigs in it's beak, but they move so fast and I'm outof practice right now :)
