To reply to Dud. It's all depth of field. If it is narrow the amount in focus is small so the rest including the bars is thrown. He was about 30 ft away and the bars about 5.

This is a great picture. It is looking straight at you. Is this an eagle? What kind of cage was it in and how did you get rid of the bars?
