Owl - Young Great Horned Owl

Wanted to add, these owls are all "in the wild". Also, check out his tail, further down,-- he's taller than he first appears to be : ) this is one of the young Great Horned Owls that we have watched since they hatched earlier this year, in the area where we walk our Labs each day.

The parent owls have raised their young in this area for many years. There are 3 baby owls this year. As you can see, they are nearly full grown now. Wonderful creatures. We feel privileged to see them each day and especially to get these photos : )

that's very nice of you Leslie, many thanks for the nice comments. We certainly do feel blessed to live where so much wildlife abounds so close to home.

thanks Gabee for the comment. I don't have any snowy owls with beaks open, but they will be returning to this area soon, so I might get one later this winter : )

interesting re you tracking the family of Great horned owls. Am not too sure about the question you asked, but believe the owls are capable of making the different types of sounds, as we hear them doin that also, around here. They hoot and shriek at different times.

I have been tracking a Great Horned Owl family. Just last night I noticed that the 3 youngsters' voices have changed from the shriek to hooting. Only a few days ago I heard them still shrieking. How does this change happen, and so quickly?

Hi Katie, hope you get to see the owls before long. We did see them this year, but weren't early enough to see them in their nest, which we'd hoped to do. I got some shots of them way high up, - but the owl family has left now.

I am so jealous you can see owls like that. Sometimes I hear them in our woods but I have rarely seen one. Have you seen them this year?

very late with this thanks also, Hazelnut, almost a year later! glad you like the pics. there should be some new owl babies at that place soon, haven't checked for sometime.

late with this, but thanks Ganesh. The rabbit was in another photo, which I just recently dumped. Have dumped a lot of pics lately, about 300 I think : )

I was just joking. I knew you'd bump me down, that's why I told you to check the avian box.

km is Karen Moen she has several bird photos with high scores but hasn't checked the avian box yet.

Where is km?

Beautiful bird.

I use to know where a pair lived.

Those buggers loved eating my chickens. Strange thing was they would only eat the heads.

thanks Petra, Tam and Dud. yeah, I love this one too, and like recalling the time we saw them there that day, and took the pics of them, especially this one.

What a beautiful owl, I am green with envy that you get to see these guys in the wild.

Alandra from British Columbia, Canada on Jul 27, 2004 at 6:47 PM said:

Hi Deb, it was early evening (summertime here : ) and this owl was sitting in some cottonwoods, overlooking a field, preparing for the evening's hunt. That one is one of the 3 youngsters. Did you see the entry where one owl had a rabbit, the legs are dangling below the branch where the owl is perched.

Silverdebster from New Zealand on Jul 27, 2004 at 4:15 PM said:

Wow! How come the owl is out in the daylight? Is it guarding the young or hunting?

We have only 1 native owl in NZ, the Morepork. It's very little but has a huge call "Morepork. Morepork"
