Young Desert Jack Rabbit

While taking my daily walk in the desert I managed to sneak up on this young Jack Rabbit. I just love doing that, we stared at each other for a good minute then he took off at full speed. Jack Rabbits are true hares because, unlike the cotton-tailed rabbits, they do not build nests. The mother simply chooses a place to her liking and the young are born fully furred, with their eyes wide open. Hares are active primarily at night. During the day they lie crouched in a "form" which they have made by using the same spot in a clump of grass or weeds. With their long ears flattened against their back, they are difficult to see. Frequently on hot summer days, they can be seen resting in the shade of a small bush or even a fence post. When frightened they run with such speed that few dogs can catch them. At the start of the chase their speed is broken by high long leaps.

Hi Julie, Thanks very much :) I'm glad it brought back some nice memories of loved Revel. Our dog Daisy loves to chase the rabbits but she is not even close to there speed. All of the cactus makes it hard for her to keep up LOL..

Love the Rabbit, bet my old Revel dog could run him for hours with only a few checks if only he hadn't past on. His son would sight chase it, but isn't nearly as fast or talented as his daddy. Revel use to get kicked out of field trials for being to fast. To see him only 3 feet behind a hare wasn't unusual, at least until it turned!

Hi Alex and Lorraine, Thanks again for taking your time to check out my photos and for leaving your nice comments. Yea Alex they do blend into the desert, I walk slowly looking for them and a lot of the times I don't see them until they run out of a bush right in front of me. That is funny Lorraine about your dogs, it is amazing at how fast the rabbits can run. I guess that saying is true that you can run faster when your scared :)

Great shot, I can remember Hares from on the farm, the dogs would go on a mad chase but the Hares were well gone, poor dogs would turn up home totally worn out from running, and tongues almost dragging in the dust.

Thanks Carol and Don for checking out my latests rabbit shot and for the nice comments. Yea Don the jacks are much larger than the cottontails. This young jack is already the size of the full grown cottontails.

Nice clean shot Alan! I've never seen a Jack Rabbit in person, I think they are bigger than the cotton tails we have, not sure though. Good catch! Don
