About This Image

At last, the male Rufous Hummingbird has arrived at our garden nectar feeders. The female hummer arrived last month, so we are really happy to see this little fella now.
This photo shows his lovely iridescent red gorget/throat feathers. He had been bathing in our little fountain bubbler, and was preening here on this branch afterwards. You can see a water droplet on his throat, just below beak, maybe 2 droplets.

Hi Karen and Janice, many thanks to both of you for the very encouraging comments, - that's really nice. Am quite pleased with this one, in that it shows the varying colours of the iridescence on his gorget. It does vary from a beautiful goldy/red to the "just red" colour, depending on the light. (I hesitate to use the words "just red" when it comes to describing these jewels tho'), as there's nothing ordinary about them. The photos never quite do justice to the beauty that shows in reality tho'.

Alandra what a beaut. The colors are so crisp and vivid.

Ever since you got that lens you have captured incredibly detailed shots of these little jewels. Good eye and good timing complete the beautiful close-ups. Well done!

thanks very much, Alan, for the nice comments. We missed seeing this little fella the past 2 days as we were out, - but saw the female hummer feeding here twice before we left. The males have usually bathed here very early in the mornings in previous years, so I'll have to start getting up earlier if I want to see him when he visits at that time :) Otherwise, will have to watch for him just before dusk, when he stops by to feed and bathe again.

many thanks, Gunnar, for the nice comments, glad you liked it :) Yes, we really do feel fortunate, having these little jewels visiting our gardens. They fly such a long distance to return here each spring/summer, so we appreciate them very much. We hang a nectar feeder at the front and back garden for them. Plus we buy special plants for our garden, which the hummers especially like feeding from, to attract them, and to help sustain them.
