Taughannock Falls, Trumansburg, New York

The clouds cleared and the sun shone brightly as we arrived at Taughannock Falls this morning. With a vertical drop of 215 feet, this beautiful waterfall is the tallest in North America, east of the Rockies. Canada's famed Horseshoe Falls on the Niagara River drop 170 feet and the neighboring American Falls are a mere 70 feet in height. Note the size of the visitors at the foot of this 3/4 mile long gorge.

Good morning Steve and Alex. Steve, I was curious about the height of this one, Vs Niagara and my favorie Michigan waterfall, so Googled the info from them and was quite surprised over the vast vertical drop difference. I have more geological info to share when I post some images taken during my walk along the lower gorge to see the waterfall.

Alex, there are three people standing just to the right of the footbridge - you may see them better if you save the image then magnify it! By the time I reached the base of the waterfall several youngsters were playing in the water on the rocks - not the safest place as they were quite slippery. Vicki

Another beautiful landscape. Love the color and composition. Can't see any visitors, but I can see the bridge. Those falls must be awfully impressive close up. I will need to visit this place one day.

Vicki, this is absolutely stunning! Very interesting info on the relative heights of the waterfalls, and the contrasting ecosystems are fascinating.

Thank you, Mary and Lorraine. It's actually two eco systems - the trees and plants on the left are different from those on the right as the sun cannot fully reach the left side. Vicki
