Detail of Taughannock Falls

This one is in response to Steve's interest in the rock face. It's quite fascinating.

Good morning, PG and Alex. It's quite a sight and unique in that there is always shade in this gorge due to its location and constant evolution. Vicki

The diaginal cuts and oppisite lighting effects of the dark shadows and very bright light makes the compositon of this picture ecellent. The eye tends to move very smoothly over all of the picture. Excellent view!!!

Good evening, Steve and Marsha. An interesting factor here is not only how far the upper edges of the gorge have eroded from the waters, but also at the creek bed level. The multiple rock types cause constant erosion as lower levels break away and cause higher layers to break off. Just as the high point of the main waterfall drops down over the millennia, so too does the creek bed. Curiouser and curiouser!

Wow, Vicki, this was worth waiting for! Interesting to note how much higher the waterfall used to be before the stream eroded the rock - I'm talking several million years ago here, of course! I like the diagonal of dark between the two corners of light.
