Following very helpful feedback from Lulu, here's another version. In the first version I was trying to suggest the idea of a dirty or steamy mirror that someone had wiped their finger on, and had discovered the rose's colour by so doing. Lulu's idea has made that notion a bit more explicit, and I think more successful! Thanks Lulu!
