thanks Deb, - am also smiling, as have no idea what speed and aperture, (you know me, I don't read manuals if it can be helped : ) - as have it on basic mode auto or something like that, and set for the "sports" symbol as I figured that was high speed to capture the birds as well as sports. And I recently figured out how to set it for "burst mode", so the camera just takes the photos : ) (all "very technical" : ) Your Canon should have the same symbols etc, am sure.

I'll check the exif data later and let you know what the speed etc was, if I can find it.

Silverdebster from New Zealand on Jun 16, 2006 at 4:55 AM said:

What a skill :) What speed/aperture settings do you need to capture such swift movement, and still get such excellent exposure?

thankyou Carol and Mary for the very nice comments. I like the little feet in that one : )

forgot to add, thankyou Marsha for the nice comments, glad you like them : )

Alandra from westcoast Canada on Jun 15, 2006 at 4:41 PM said:

Hi Marsha, IS is Image Stabilization (on the lens in this case). Didn't know about this either, until we met some people taking pics a year ago of baby owls in our area, and they told me their lenses were IS, so then I made up my mind "that was for me" as I'm not "into tripods" : )

marsha sea from florida on Jun 15, 2006 at 10:27 AM said:

Your hummingbird pictures are amazing! What is IS?

Alandra from westcoast Canada on Jun 15, 2006 at 1:37 AM said:

thankyou Plumeriagrl, comments appreciated : ) I like the front view also for a change, altho sometimes their beaks look kinda strange from the front : )

Hi Alex, yes, that looks like the one. I would never have bought it, (I was looking at a different telephoto lens) -- but hubby came in to the camera shop, from parking the vehicle on Broadway in Vancouver, and talked me into it. Am glad he did : )

Alex D. from Alameda, CA on Jun 14, 2006 at 10:38 PM said:

Is an "L" (white frame/red stripe) lens? (See link)

http://www.tanchung.com/canon/ef100400mmf4556xuis.htm

Whichever it is, it helps you take some truely fabulous pictures.

Alandra from westcoast Canada on Jun 14, 2006 at 9:16 PM said:

Hi Alex, mentioned the lens sometime ago, - guess you missed it. It's a Canon 100-400 IS telephoto lens. - very heavy : ) I love the IS feature.

Alex D. from Alameda, CA on Jun 14, 2006 at 8:49 PM said:

Please share with us what lens you are using for these photos.

Alandra from westcoast Canada on Jun 14, 2006 at 7:40 PM said:

that's very nice of you, Tania, thanks very much. Happy you like it also : ) We love these tiny birds, as so many people do. My DH was just out by the lily pond, fixing up a fountain there, and 3 hummingbirds were flying so close to him and the new water spray/fountain, that he could have touched them. They also fly close to me when am watering the garden with the water hose, they "dance"/hover in the spray from the hose, but it has to be on fine mist, otherwise it will hurt them, as they are pretty tiny and fragile. Of course, I cant be taking pics and using the hose at same time, so didn't get any pics of that : )
