hummingbird female having a shower in the "mister" spray, which we've attached to the fence in the upper border of the front patio.

Took this while sitting out there.

Hi Artsy, thankyou for the nice comments, - have forgotten your name, sorry. The lens am using for these bird shots is a Canon 100-400 telephoto IS lens. Love it, have hardly had it off camera since getting it. I have the Canon 17-85mm IS USM lens too, but have hardly used it : ) - should get used to that one too, but this telephoto is so much fun, I use it all the time.

thanks Alex and Carol. I hope the idea with the hose will work to attract the birds to your lovely property, it should. They seem to like to "hide" somewhat when they bathe, amongst the branches, like with the mister, it's up near the rhodo and forsythia leaves and branches, for protection from predatory birds. Maybe the bird bath is too much "out in the open" for their liking, am not sure where yours is placed, just a thought.

Hi Karen, thanks. well, in summertime, it's the sound of the running water that attracts them. If you don't have this, it's easy to attach a watering hose to a tree branch (just lodge the hose over a branch where it won't fall off) - set the spray part to a spray or mist setting, and leave it running. The birds will soon find it. If you let some of the spray run on leaves of the tree, they will drink from the leaves and roll on the leaves to bathe also. We do that out the back quite often with the hose.

Another lovely bird picture. Your yard must seem idyllic for the birds. Well done.

thanks Mary, - most of the small birds really seem to love the mister, quite entertaining to watch them slipping and sliding over the leaves as they try to bathe and drink the droplets on the leaves : )
