Pineapple tree

I have had this tree for about 4 years and this is the first flower. I have waited patiently for this and now after seeing it, I can't wait for the whole tree to be covered, What a sight that should be.

How's your pineapple tree doing? Do you get much fruit from it?

WalMart had Pineapple Lily plants. The yellow flower does look like a pineapple shape.

For growing pineapples from the tops.....

It took two years for any pineapples to grow from the tops of pineapples from the store. Just cut the top off near the crown and I set mine in water to root. Change the water or any remaining pineapple will ferment. The pineapples (nearly the size of the store bought ones) grow from the center of the top. Water good with good drainage. This is a tropical plant so pot the tops to bring inside during cold spells up north. A pretty (free) plant.

We bought a 6' Pineapple Tree a couple of days ago - the perfume from the bright yellow flowers is very strong and, as the name suggests, smells just like a ripe pineapple! Beautiful!

I have had a pinapple tree for about six year and has flowered beautifully every year, but this year seems to be struggling - very few leaves, some floweres just about to come into bloom-any suggestions on what I can to do to bring it back to a healthy plant?

I am a teacher, and my students asked me whether pineapples grow from trees or from ground. Yes, most people I think especially in Central Asia do not know exactly about pineapples. But as you know there are different species of pineapples. Some pineapples (especially may be historically old species) grew from trees. But the most popular ones are ANANAS COMOSUS that we use their edible fruits grow from bushes having neqrly 1,5 meters. But there is also PINEAPPLE TREES! What about this? What about its taxonomic property, that's what I want to know... Thanks...

I have a new Pineapple plant to attempt another tree. I have removed all of the old fruit and some of the leaves to show some small roots. I will lay it aside for a few days and hope it will do fine. I started two more about three years ago and one died. The other one is still struggling to live. I hope this one will do fine.

my friend thought pineapples grow underground. HAHA!

Bernadette from United States on Mar 26, 2006 at 7:38 PM said:

It is not really a pineapple tree. This may be a nickname for this plant because of the way that it looks, but I would not be surprised if it never bears any fruit. It is a common misconception that pineapples grow on trees. This is not true, pineapples are bromellicae and they grow on bush type plants.

I saw your picture of the pineapple tree and thought it was awesome.....do you let it grow outdoors all the time? Also, I would love to know where to get one of these......and try growing one myself....I love unusual plants.

Cytisus battandieri IS A MEMBER OF THE LEGUMINACEAE (PEAS, BEANS BROOM, LUPIN AND LABURNUM ARE MEMBERS - COMMONLY REFFERRED TO AS "LEGUMES"). I SAW ONE YESTERDAY (13/06/05) IN A GARDEN AT A FUNDRAISING EVENT AT MEONSTOKE, HAMPSHIRE, UK. AS WELL AS THE INFOLESCENCE LOOKING VAGUELY LIKE A PINEAPPLE, THE SCENT (OF THIS PARTICULAR SPECIMEN) WAS LIKE A VERY RIPE ONE !!

PINEAPPLES PROPER ARE BORNE ON A TERRESTRIAL BROMELIAD (ANANAS sp., BROMILACEAE) WHICH, OF THE HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF SPECIES, VARIETIES AND CULTIVARS IS THE ONLY BROMELIAD WIDELY COMMERCIALLY VALUABLE AS A FOODSTUFF. MANY OTHER BROMELIADS ARE GROWN FOR THEIR COLOUR/FLOWER SPIKES FOR THE HORTICULTURAL INDUSTRY.

ALLY from UK on Jun 2, 2005 at 2:50 PM said:

The picture is of the shrub known commonly as Pineapple or Morrocan Broom- its Latin name is:

Cytisus battandieri

It is nicknamed the Pineapple Tree because of the shape of the flowers - it does not bear fruit and is best grown in a large area south facing.

Real Pineapples grow on low bushes- they do not grow underground!

am just guessing, but would think that this is just a nickname for this plant, and that it's not a "real" pineapple tree : )- I mean one that grows real pineapples

I have 2 pineapple plants grown from the tops of pineapples. They do not look like this one. They are like the tops of pineapples that you get at the store for eating.

Great shot of the tree. I love the yellow flowers. Did you know the Spanish moss is related to the pineapple? For a look at Spanish moss please see:
