Golda, in the old days, the Maori (NZ's indigenous people) very much lived off the land and used flax leaves to make clothing and bags, to name a few things. Maori art and culture is very traditional and beautiful, and the flax is a very precious plant in the Maori culture. The school my daughter goes to has a saying in Maori "Nga Rau o te Harakeke" - which translates in English to "The Leaves of the Flax". This is indicative of how prescious they are. There's your cultural lesson for the day:)
