Louie Prima

This is the grave of Louis Prima, a famous Jazz musician. He played a great Just a Gigilo and played King Louie in the animated version of the Jungle Book. The background shows a mass grave. They are stacked 4 high as you can see by the recessed areas.

Thanks for the comment. My Dad went to school with Sam. The words are from just a gigolo. They are "When the end comes I know, they'll say just a gigolo and life goes on without me.

I love the music but never had the honor. I did go to school with Pete's son but that is another group. Oh yea, that's Pete FOuntain for those wondering.

Visited this cemetary a few years ago. Great photo. What was the phrase from one of his songs engraved on his tombstone (the memory is going). Saw Sam and the Wild Ones and Keeley at the DI in Vegas a long time ago and then both of them separately. Not old enough to have seen Louie/Sam/Keeley/ but it must have been something!

Thanks for the comment!! I have not been to the Metairie Cemetery since the hurricane. Most of the places Prima played while in New Orleans are all right because he played in places that were part of Storyville. Most of these places are old New Orleans and were relatively spared from the storm. The Saenger Theater, where Louie and many others performed sustained damage and many musicians, including one of my neices, that would play there are not able to do so. Louie went to Jesuit High School, the first flooded school in New Orleans to reopen on its original campus.

Great photo. Love Louie, Keely, Sam and the Witnesses. 40 now, but kind of wish I was old enough or could go back in time to see them in Vegas in there heyday. Love their live cds. So much fun. Was this place or any old Prima haunts effected by Katrina?

I hate to say I do not know but I don't. I have never had that problem. Your pics are great. I wish I knew how to make them larger. I would be glad to help.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I am glad you got to see him Gary. Jumbo (Al Hirt) is buried somewhere in the same cemetery but I have not found it yet. I plan to do a search for his on my next visit.

So that's where Louis is! I got to see him and his wife, Keely Smith, play in Reno one time. They were terrific!
