Blind Raccoon at our fountain

this blind raccoon came to our fountain area on our front patio for a drink and was also wandering around in the backgarden. At first I thought she had a bit of sight, but after watching her bump into things, realized she's blind and disoriented, poor thing. She's looking towards me (in the open window)as she can hear the shutter of the camera. She has been around here for sometime, as I had seen her with a "bad eye" quite awhile ago,- but hadn't seen her for ages, - but guess she's venturing out in daytime now, not being able to defend herself when the others are out at night time. They usually only venture out in daylight if there's something wrong, - or if they have babies that they need to protect at night.

Gary, I thoroughly enjoy your column and am looking forward to tales from Alaska.

I have recently put in a new lawn and would appreciate your tips for raccoons sheet. 220-602 Even though I seranade them nightly with a country western music station (from one of your tips my sister remembered, who also reads your column), every morning is a different result on the patchwork the raccoons do. 640-553 The lawn has been in place for almost a month and the number of rolled back sections is more than several hundred. The worms are fat and juicy and the prime attraction for the raccoons. I enjoy wild life; have a great garden, 642-524 a riot of beautiful flowers and, lots of birds plus a resident toad, but I would also like to keep a lawn. I am looking forward to the fact sheet. Many Thanks,

Diana Torres

just an update (it's now almost a year later) to say that we didn't see the baby raccoon again after that last entry, nearly a year ago. Something must have happened to it in the strong wind that I mentioned here at that time, perhaps it fell out of a tree. we'll never know.

In the meantime, this mother raccoon is still visiting us most days, and we heard from a neighbour that she has a new baby, apparently it's hidden in the same back garden as she used for her nest as last year, (across the street from us) but we haven't seen the new youngster yet.

since my last entry on this image, this mama raccoon has a baby! There are pics here of the baby with mama, for those who haven't seen them. The youngster leads the mother, have an image of it doing so. Unfortunately, the baby had hurt one of its hind legs a few days ago, so was favouring it, but it could bear weight on it, thank goodness. I didn't see them today, 9 July, so trust all's well with the pair of them. very strong winds here today, blowing the tall treetops like crazy.

an update, - the blind raccoon is still around, she was in our back yard a couple hours ago, and I gave her food so that she wouldn't have to roam about searching for something to eat. she's likely sleeping someplace now, as she did the other day after she ate, - in the lower branches of a buddliea tree in our back yard :)

thankyou Beverly, Doug and Lorraine for the caring comments. I feel the same way, it is sad. I believe she will stay around here, - as she has been around here for several years, but I've only seen her again lately since she started appearing in daytime, since the blindness set in totally (I assume).

Problem is, there's quite a busy road at the back of our property, so if she ventures out there, she probably won't survive. She was wandering around in our back garden again this afternoon, - one of our Labs barked like mad when she spotted the raccoon (we were sitting in the solarium and happened to notice her roaming out there, disoriented). It's a bit of a concern with the dogs too.

How terribly sad that this poor creature has to try and survive like that.

The poor thing, is it likley that she will stay in your area, or are they the sort of animals that roam for quite some distance, as that would be quite a problem for her,

How sad - but if she has been around for sometime, she has apparently learned how to overcome her sight problems
