Our New Zealand kiwi, these birds are flightless, they come out at night, they are protected, you are not to hunt, chase or capture them, if you happen to see one in the wild you would be very lucky. This poor fellows days of looking for grubs is long over, he now makes a great display in the museum.

Thankyou Mary for looking in and the comments, there are breeding programs over here, and safe places to release them, DOC really go out of there way to get the population of them up, we have to take care because once they are gone , they are gone forever.

What a beautiful bird. I did a google search on this bird and found out that the feathers are like hair and the feathers are what got my attention on your photo. The article also said that while most birds depend on sight, the Kiwi has a highly developed sense of smell. Really interesting.
