Big Beetle

I found this large (1+ inch) beetle running down a sand track in Richmond Co., NC on April 20, 2005. It didn't look as if it would stop until I flashed it with my camera, then it allowed many photos.

great macro of the beetle. Didn't realize there was so much to know about them. Great that they eat the caterpillars and larvae. What do the beetle larvae or eggs look like? I dug something out of the ground recently and wasn't sure what it was.

That's Pasimachus marginatus (Fab.) The ridged elytra and from NC narrows it down to that species. Tribe Scaritini as someone else has already mentioned.

That is a great beetle close up. I wonder if it stayed still due to the flash. It might have thought that something bigger was after it and if it stayed still then the bigger thing could not attack.

ray i think this is from the genus pasimachus. they are the Pedunculate ground beetles, Tribe Scaritini. it is considered common but they dont have a common name. they are caterpillar and larvae hunters.
