well you gave me a search point Don and you are nearly right, they are called a white ibis here http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/finder/display.cfm?id=85 a crane in Australia is a Brolga, of which I have heard but never seen, they are a bird of folklore here. thanks Laura

What a nice shot of those birds.They look a lot like the black headed ibis.
