About This Image

While over in Rarotonga on Holiday A Vaka (Cook Island canoe)Regatta was held. Over the week prior to the regatta starting People from different Islands gathered and made these Vakas using traditional tools shown here and modern tools such as chainsaws and electric plains to spead up the process. It was amaising to see th progress from a tree trunk to them being paddled around the lagoon.

It was great to watch. The crowd was reasonably quiet but the drums were fast and loud it was great.

Well caught Tania. They call them Vaka's, We call them Waka's. Different Island, different language. I bet the excitement was electric with all the cheering for a loved Vaka.
