About This Image

This one is for you, Alandra. You claim to have never seen a white egret. This is not a white egret, but a Snowy Egret. The yellow claws are a giveaway. They aren't as common as white egrets around here, but every so often you see one. Taken at Crab Cove in Alameda.

P.S. I enjoy your Herons.

Yes, Snowy Egrets look very much like their cousin, the white egret. The Snowy Egret is a little smaller and has the yellow feet. They also appear to have more downy feathers that become evident when they are interacting with other Snowy Egrets. Apparently, Snowy Egrets were driven close to extinction in the previous century, because their feathers were prized for hats.

How nice of you, Alex D! thanks so much, - and then I missed it when you first put this one up here! Am so happy that I just found it. Also interesting about the difference between the Snowy Egrets and White Egrets, didn't realize this. Thanks again, it's a lovely image.

The Snowy Egret is so beautiful. And like you, I enjoy Alandra's Herons also. I always like the bird pictures and especially when added info is put in. A lovely picture.
