About This Image

female Rufous hummingbird beside a daffodil, as she drinks and bathes on our front patio. Captured from about
30 feet away, from the open front window, with telephoto lens, Canon 100-400L. Hand held.
Believe this to be the 2nd female hummer here. The first one that arrived mid March is more timid.

lol, Janice. It's topknot does look comical : ) It's turned chilly again, so sure hope they'll be okay. They've been gathering the seed pod fluff from last summer's windflowers (Japanese anemones), so maybe they're making warm places to stay at nights. I noticed some of the fluff stuck near the opening to the nectar on the feeder out back today, so it must've come off the hummer's beak as it was feeding. We have seen them gathering this fluff from the seed pods over the years, and you can see where it's been pulled off the dead seed heads. Some of the other small birds also use this fluffy stuff, ie the bushtits.

thanks Carol. They seem to be feeding at the front feeder more often so far this morning. Maybe due to the competition : )
