About This Image

One of my favorite pictures, taken in the small town of Ruckingen, Germany (near Hanau) in the summer of 1959. (I was in the US Army, stationed nearby). My wife and I lived in the house seen in the background just above the horse's back.

My wife and I were married in Ruckingen and I served with the Corporal Missle outfit at Flegalhorst. We lived off base and our first son Richard was born in Frankfurt. Great memories of wonderful people and close relationships with other enlisted during those years. 1962-1964. Our home we rented was at 19 Garten Strasse Henry Loch and his wife and Norbert the young son at that time.

Ruckingen, A Hero's Final Home

Cynthia Schiffhauer - Nov 17, 2015 04:31 PM EDT
I lived with my husband, John Schiffhauer, in Ruckingen from 1967-1968. He was stationed with the U.S. Army nearby. If you look at the far left of the picture you can see a Gothic steeple which was the church across the street where we lived. We loved Ruckingen & took long walks each evening. This proved to be our last home when my husband was sent to Vietnam Nam where he died heroically, saving lives. I thank all the wonderful German people who made our stay so beautiful. We were blessed with a handsome son, born two months before his father died. A special town, indeed!

Lived there...1960-1963

We lived in Ruckingen, sometime between 1960-1963. I went to Jr. High in Hanau and later to Frankfurt American High School. Wonderful memories.

My father was stationed at Pioneer Kaserne in Hanau 1961-1963. We lived in Ruckingen in a guest house over a gas station along a busy thoroughfare by a cemetary. Vague beautiful memory of walking through the village. Loved Germany, one of the best times of my life!

I can see why you like this photograph, Alfresco. You have captured such a wonderful impromptu capture of the people at work in the fields. The older gent sizing up the job at hand, the children enjoying being part of this day and with the bike resting against the haystack. The trees on the horizon bent with the breeze and bringing your eye to the beautiful blue sky that day. Pops of color by the roof-tops of the quaint houses of the locals. Yes, I can see why you enjoy this capture.
