About This Image

Sitting under my awning while working on a project at the Les and Penny Thompson Campground in Miami, Florida, I was startled by a movement in my peripheral vision. In a post that holds the water taps for the next site, Red-bellied woodpeckers were preparing their nesting site in an open knothole. The first flew away before I reached for my camera, so I planned to sit quietly and hope for its return - when the mate popped its head out of the knothole!

Thank you all - they were definitely unhappy that I spotted them at such a busy moment! I certainly didn't expect to see this second one emerge from that knothole.
