About This Image

This is a view of a new 13 acre wetland in a local park. It was constructed last year as a mandated replacement for some wetlands that were destroyed in expansion of the county airport. It's been interesting to watch the evolution of the area from a pit in the ground a year ago to a meadow over the summer, then the surprise of a huge cover of wild sunflowers in September. There were also a lot of native trees and shrubs planted, and other wildflowers and grasses, and in 5-10 years it should be well on the way to becoming a mature wetland. The soil that was removed was trucked to the other end of the park, and was graded into sports fields.

Lovely photo of the reclaimed land, I think they are suposed to do that with some of the gravel pits in our area after removing the dirt. Carol
