About This Image

This is a photograph of the front of Murphys Historic Hotel in Murphys, California. Murphys is an historic town located in the Sierra foothills. This town was one of several in the area that spawned the California Gold Rush in 1849 and afterwords.

This hotel built in 1856 (this is old for California) boasts many famous personages as it's guests. They include:

Ulyssess S. Grant
J.P. Morgan
Susan B. Anthony
Black Bart (Outlaw)
Mark Twain

Several of the rooms are preseverd in the their original state. The town is an interesting place to visit and the hotel is a particularly fun place to check out.

I happened to be waiting across the street from the hotel and decided to pull off a few shots. Coincidently, a man stepped out into the doorway of the pub and started taking pictures of me. (You can see him in the photo (left door)). We stood there for a few seconds in a genuine photographic shootout on Main Street.

Interesting to read about this, Alex D, and funny also about the "photo shootout". Noticed "Black Bart" in the list of hotel guests. What about his son "Smokey" ? I'd always heard of them mentioned together.

You made Headlines! Shoot out at Murphy's Hotel!! You more than captured the essence of that scene! You transformed us to the Callifornia Gold Rush Days! Thank you. A picture with a history to treasure.
