At maketu on the coastline of the Pacific in the Bay of Plenty NZ, there is a tall monument, this carving is at the base

Yes, this is a maori carving on the stone memorial. The shells are paua which is also known in US as abalone. A memorial to the landing of the Arawa Waka (canoe) from Hawaaiki, it believed sometime after 1150AD.

What does this carving signify?Is it some kind of shell embeded in the eyes?Very interesting shot,and great color.
