Yes, this is a maori carving on the stone memorial. The shells are paua which is also known in US as abalone. A memorial to the landing of the Arawa Waka (canoe) from Hawaaiki, it believed sometime after 1150AD.

What does this carving signify?Is it some kind of shell embeded in the eyes?Very interesting shot,and great color.
