About This Image

Large Male Red Damselfly 'family Coenagriidae' between 40-50mm. Female has more black on the abdomen, including a black line down the centre. legs are black with both sexes. It is one of the commonest damselflies and one of the first to appear in the spring. It flies April-September, inhabiting still and slow-moving water, including peat bogs.
