thanks Mary. yes, think this is a young one, it was much "tamer" than they usually are, plus the red gorget (throat) iridescent feathers were not that "full", as can be seen on some other shots I got that day. the throat spots can be seen in this one, just appearing as darker spots (not shining red). Some are quite pale on the undersides, and it also depends on how the light reflects off their iridescent feathers too. This was taken in late afternoon, early evening, dull day, plus there's a bit of an overhang of a shrub above the crocosmia plant, creating more shade, so this would account also for the paleness. Its back had quite a pretty green iridescence, as you can see in the shot "doing the side stroke" and the "detail" of that one. not sure if you've seen those yet. The Rufous hummers are much darker coloured, as their name suggests, not sure which type this is
