About This Image

Great Horned Owl in our area this evening. First one we've seen for awhile, as we hadn't checked lately. But am happy the owl family is back again. This one was quite high up and some distance away. Am still hoping to see the owls on a lower branch. A flock of crows was harrassing the owls, and this owl was really watching and hiding under the leafy branches from the crows.
Someone told us that she sees a parent GH owl and a young owl each morning there around 7AM when she walks her dogs - - (am wondering if we are that enthusiastic about seeing them, to go down there so early : ) Time will tell.

Hi Alex, yes, it is the same owl family. They are here year after year, raising their young and hunting in the fields locally. Good question as to whether this one is a parent or a youngster : ) Was wondering the same thing while there yesterday, - - the youngsters from this year would be fullgrown by now, so it's hard to say. I was thinking by the way that it seemed afraid of the huge flock of harrassing crows, that it might be one of the youngsters, - but that's purely a guess. Unless I see a smaller sized owl near an older owl, I won't know. Will have to get up early and get down there to try to see the younger ones. The lady we spoke with yesterday said that an adult owl and youngster are there each morning around 7 am.

Are these related to the owls you were shooting several months back? If it is the same family, can you tell if it is a parent or one of the children?

thankyou both, Carol and Alex, - am just hoping to see these guys on some lower branches, - a few years back, one was perched a couple feet from the ground as I walked by!!, - it startled me, it looked sooo big sitting there. At that time I wasn't a photo addict, so didn't have camera with me, just dog walking!

thankyou Don. When we first found this owl, he was perched slightly lower down the tree for the first few frames. But he flew up higher shortly after. You can see one of his talons quite well here tho', protruding outwards from the branch. We don't mind getting up early if it's for owl shots, but the problem is that I don't get to bed til around 2-3 AM : ) Will have to change my habits.
