About This Image

My heron friend was down at the Ballena cove again today. He/she was kind enough to let me creep fairly close (25ft.) and get this shot.

When I first saw this gem we were in Virginia on our first Workamping venture. Being around so many herons and egrets down here in Florida last year I learned to appreciate more of their habits. This Great Blue is a mature bird wearing it's mating plumage - the incredible beard effect under its throat. Immature birds don't get it, and it's greatly reduced after mating season. Getting this shot is truly amazing in its clarity and what it tells us about this particular bird.

The Great Blue Heron is such a majestic bird. It is one of my favourite subjects to photograph. This is quite simply one of the nicest photos I have ever seen.

Sorry I missed this when it was first put online, but oddly enough the last comment was on my birthday. We used to see thes beautiful birds on big flat rocks that lined our creek. But I never saw one that the sun had painted so beautifully. It is a real thrill to see it standing there so majestically. *g* I am so happy you shared it with us. Congratulations for sensational capture!

This shot really stands out to me! The closeness, and detail and cloring is just wonderful! Great Job! ~Jeannette~

Interesting you mentioned that about the Great Blue herons visiting fishponds, Nate, as we had that happen a year ago, following a rare snowfall in our area, - a GB heron swooped down onto our small fishpond, think he landed on one vehicle in driveway first (saw it's prints in the snow after) and then onto the low wall beside the pond. Husband saw the heron at the pond, but he had left by the time I got to the window, so all I saw were the prints on wall and vehicle. Was really sorry I'd missed seeing the heron on our patio

I love it. Great blue herons are really shy. But I've heard if you have a pond with fish they'll be more than obliged to come and, well, terrorize the fishy residence lol birdzilla lol

A beautiful photo of the Great Blue and I love the framing.

Great shot! Great Blues are usually really shy.

This ID discussion is one of the most interesting and fun aspects of nature photography. I learned what a Ruby Crowned Kinglet was only after it tapped on my window! No matter--the photo is excellent. Thanks for sharing it!

Ok, I concede my innate naturalist stupidity: This is a Great Blue Heron. I double checked on a few websites to confirm. Redish hues of sunset made the blue/grey color of the wings appear more brownish. I corrected all references to the "egret".

Alandra, I think you might be correct. I looked in my bird book and it seems to look like a Great Blue Heron, although I can't see the color of the body. Whatever it is, the pic is gorgeous!

am wondering, have never seen an egret in real life, but have seen herons/cranes, and am thinking perhaps this might be a heron. We have lots of Great Blue herons around here, and the head and neck tufts look like those of the herons we see. just a thought, anyone else know?

I've got to say, this is as good as it gets! Wonderful photo and frame. Congratulations.

Forgot to say, it looks great.

I have never seen an egret like this. The ones I am used to are all white.

absolutely fantastic photo. Glorious colouring. Prize winner for sure. can't stop looking at the detail in it, the feathers under his neck, and on his wings, oh so beautiful. and his matching eye colour.
