About This Image

The grand prismatic pool is one of the main attractions of Yellowstone. It's formed by volcanic activity close to the surface, and the orange 'mud' is actually a bacteria mat that lives in the 170 degrees Fahrenheit water.

Scientists didn't think anything could live in an environment as extreme as this, but now speculate that if we find life on other planets, it will be similar to the bacteria found in this pool.
