About This Image

female Goldfinch (North American) visiting the nyger seed feeder, hanging beside our front driveway. They hang onto it without perches. Last year we made little perches for them, thinking the goldfinches would not use it without something to perch on, - but we were wrong :)

Hi Lorraine, thanks for the nice comments. Interested and surprised at what you wrote about bird feeders over there, that it's not such a thriving "hobby" as it is here. I know they've been feeding the wild birds in England for years -recall my grandma hanging suet out for them in her back garden when I was a kid, -- so just assumed "everyone" did this :) You can easily put a lump of suet in a plastic mesh bag and hang it from a tree branch for the hungry birds there in winter (those plastic mesh bags that various veggies are sold in etc)

Nice capture, I'm surprised, yo seem to have so many different sorts of feeders, its something that we have only just started to see in shops over here, I have the feeling they are more decoration than good feeders at the moment here, I always feel so sorry for the little birds in the winter.
