About This Image

This is a mushroom called the "Dog Stinkhorn" (Mutinus Elegans), which, aside from its appearance, is notable by its foul odor and wet, sticky surface. The strong carrion smell attracts insects, which in turn disperse spores, which stick to their feet. It was photographed in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State.

Just photographed one in my front garden. Found it when weeding and the smell was rather awful! First time I saw one like this.

Wow! I have had them in areas around my home. Yes, they do stink. Great capture of these stinkers.

Cool! I found one growing beside our porch when I was a kid. Smelled it long before I found it. I still remember the stench, putrid would be a compliment for these stinkers. Great shot Alfresco! Don

Great shot of a very weird fungus. I've seen them in England, although not this species with its pink "stalk", which makes it look even more, well, er, even more!!
