About This Image

This is a variety of lichen known as British Soldiers because of their bright red color. They are about 1/2 inch tall, and were growing with some clubmoss on a bedrock outcrop in Western NY State.

Thanks for the comment, Lorraine. They're not all that common around here, I've only seen them a couple times in 30 years of "watching the ground" for things to photograph.
