About This Image

A sculpture by Zimbabwean artist, which seems to combine traditional African art with an almost Picasso like modernism. The piece is entitled "The thinker".

Thanks Mike and Alandra for your wonderful comments. So far Mike I've managed to restrict my stroking to moments when I'm alone so I've avoided compulsory psychiatric treatment up to now!! And I know how you feel about catching up Alandra - I was only away just over a week and in that time more than 150 great images were posted here! It's a losing battle and so many photos that deserve comment have to go unacknowledged.

Echoing the other comments, am finally catching up with viewing all these great photos. This is a very interesting piece of work, especially like the shiny area at the base, and can see that you'd be compelled to touch it. Am smiling at Mike's comment, what a great sense of humour he has! lol

Thanks for your kind comment Don. I took this shot in my living room, and then cut out the shape of the sculpture with the GIMP's equivalent to the PS magic wand, and placed it on a neutral grey layer. But I think it looks quite convincing as a shot against a grey wall!

A very cool piece of artwork Steve, very interesting. Nice shot of it, good angle to best show it off. Beautiful. Don

Thanks Tania, and I'm glad you like this piece of art. The stone is one of the hardest known (8 on a scale where diamond is 10) and yet it is carved and polished by hand. The shiny surfaces have been smoothed and then hot oiled. The beard has been left as it was chiselled and so has a completely different texture, and lots of detail as you say. When you see this sculpture you just have to touch it and stroke it to feel all the different textures and curves. I often spend several minutes doing just that!
