About This Image

After crossing this stretch of I-40 several times I finally stopped and was delighted to discover this abandoned Hogan at the Continental Divide. At this point in the US river waters flow either towards the Pacific or the Atlantic and rains too divide falling to the east and west.

Thank you for the feedback, Gary. I thought I had the right tribe, but it's always good to get verification.

Vicki. Nice shot. Yes, the hogans are Navajo. They are the tradional homes of the Navajo and there are still many of them on the reservation.

Thank you - it's important to preserve heritage whenever possible - even if only in photo.

Thats a great shot and a very interesting building.Looks like the builder didn't want to get cornered inside of it.

Hogans were common Southwest Native American dwellings - I believe Navajo - can anyone help me here? This one has a fence going around it - and cannot be entered uninvited, but there's another open to explore close by - basic dwellings with dirt floors, there were usually sleeping quarters around the edges, a pit fire in the middle and often an elaborate weaving loom, with a low doorway you must stoop to enter through Many have been replaced with government houses. This was the first virtually abandoned one I ever saw quite close to a side road near the interstate.
