Taughannock Falls form the Bottom of the Gorge

A three-quarter mile walk that can easily take an hour each way brings one to the base of this spectacular waterfall from Cayuga Lake where its waters empty out. By the time I spotted the lofty waterfall through the trees I was using my spare battery and my memory card was guarding more than a hundred images!

Thank you Ikka and Indieshell. I'm glad you agree with my feelings about this incredible location. ANd you are right, Ikka - it is a great place to meditate. Vicki

Thank you, Karen. The natural sepia tones from the Spring lighting were part of the intrigue as I rounded the last corner and saw this scene before me. Vicki

Beautifully composed but it is the lighting that makes this special, even catching the spray. Well done. You deserve extra credit for being able to spell that name---quite a mouthful!

Hullo, dear friend. Yes, it is incredibly humbling to be permitted to physically savor such a location. Walking along the trail I was constantly thanking the higher powers for allowing me this incredible experience.

I've seen many gorgeous waterfalls, but this one was truly the most profound - perhaps the fact it is near sacred Indian grounds may have something to do with that feeling of utter peace.

wonderful scene and capture, Vicky! Can't really add more to the other listers' comments. I really enjoyed your descriptions too, - felt as if I was "there". Can imagine that it would be an almost "humbling" type of feeling in such a presence of these falls and surroundings.

Thank you both for your comments. I knew I would be on the hiking trail as soon as I saw the top view. I was thrilled by the walk along the bottom of the canyon as there was so much to savor. Vicki

What a serene image. I think the muted color tones is a big factor in making this picture seem this way. I'm certianly glad that you did all the work on this hike, as it certianly has given us a beautiful view.

Thank you for your great comments, Steve and Alex. I was concerned that I wouldn't get the light contrasts as I was walking along the trail as it was later in the morning when I reached that point. After reading about the eco system there I could understand why there are always shadows as the sunlight is unable to penetrate the full depths of the gorge. I have some detailed rock images from the walk up, but will have to ork on pulling the detail out better in the cataract, Steve. Bear with me.

Alex - no photo processing here. Most of the sepia tone is a result of the late spring. The other is the effect of the sun almost directly overhead which caused a natural neutral quality. The area has rather an ethereal quality. I noticed that I was not the only one ho found themselves standing, humbly, sharing in this sight and not moving for quite some time. The area seems to wrap you in an invisible protection and you finally force yourself to raise your camera to its essence. Vicki

I am not sure what you did with this photo in post processing, if any, but it appears to have an unusual light sepia tone. Colors and composition are stunning. Well done.

Another simply stunning shot. Photographically, the lighting is perfect, but I long to be able to see the details in the dark shadowy rocks either side of the cataract itself!
