Strange Tree Growth

I had seen this tree along Rt22 here in Ohio several times and finally got a chance to grab a few quick shots. You don't see many like this and I though it was a strange and interesting tree. I believe it is a Red Oak. Thanks for looking. Don

That huge burl is likely full of scrambled grain patterns that could be worked into spectacular wood turnings, decorative veneer, or carvings. I'd love to have a chunk of it!

That is an interesting red oak,I have one here on my land that has a burl on it similar to that but much smaller on one side.I think mine is an injury to the tree that has healed over or something that was fastened to the tree and grown over.We don't have any termites here.

Nice image Don, I think I'm able to help you out on this one, they are Termites feeding off of the wood, eventual the tree will full down.

We first came across them while on holiday in Cuba. I'll sort out an image that I have taken, thanks for sharing Chriss:)

Thanks Carol. It is interesting isn't it. Maybe someone on the site will know exactly what it's called and how they are formed? Don
