Dog Stinkhorn

Dog StinkhornThis is a mushroom called the "Dog Stinkhorn" (Mutinus Elegans), which, aside from its appearance, is notable by its foul odor and wet, sticky surface. The strong carrion smell attracts insects, which in turn disperse spores, which stick to their feet. It was photographed in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State.
