Southern Coastline Of The Isle of Wight

This is a stretch of the southern coastline of the Isle of Wight, the island where I live.

You can see the variation in colours of the cliff face; parts are very chalky and other parts sand.

The Needles are faintly visible, in the distance, a white formation of rocks that stick up from the sea, just off the main coastline.

The Isle of Wight is gradually shrinking, due to erosion around the island's coastline and we often have parts of the cliffs, fall into the sea, especially on this side of the island.

Thanks for viewing. :)

Thanks for the comments Alandra. Have tried three times to answer your comment, in a more detailed way, but the web site doesn't like the wording and won't record it. I've tried re-writing but no luck and I can't work out which word it doesn't like?? Sorry. :(

Lovely scene, Jas. Didn't realize this about the erosion. We have similar concerns about the cliffs in various areas of this region also. A couple of winters ago, there was quite a serious "slide" - believe it was in North Vancouver, where several houses were involved, and seem to recall that there was loss of life & injuries also.

Thank you ALL for the wonderful comments on this photo!

The island is a great place to live; like taking a step back in time and quite relaxed.

The erosion is a worry, especially along the southern coast of the island. We have had many land slips and cliff falls over the years and the authorities have put in some kind of alarm system, along the coastal road, that detects movement in the surrounding land mass. As I understand it, if the alarm is activated, the road will be closed immediately and geological work will have to be carried out to check if it will be safe to re-open! Scary!!

Thanks for viewing. :)

Such a great description Jas, I enjoyed reading and also viewing your photo. It must be quite unsafe with the erosion.
