Snow Geese Twilight Flight

snow geese flight at twilight. I like how the snow geese look so white against the dusk sky. And in my version the lights in the farmhouse windows can be seen, standing out against the darkening hills.

that's very nice of you, Anne, many thanks. It's one of my favourites too. The Snow Geese will be returning to our area again soon, along with the Snowy Owls. At least something good to look forward to, in the coming winter :) altho ours are not usually too bad.

Hi Karen, thankyou, am happy you like the image. Think I didn't see the movie, - should try to rent it if it's still available. But do recall the book being a bit sad.

This is so beautiful with its subdued color. I think that book was made into a movie with Richard Harris, and I remember it being rather sad. It was called "Snow Goose."

So beautiful. The lovely white geese with their dark tipped wings hurrying home as the dark threatens to overtake them. The rolling hills are beautiful and the darkening sky beyond. Day's End. Just Lovely!!

thanks very much for the encouragement, Don. Happy you like it also. The background is a little different. Not sure how it happened like that :) as didn't alter the setting, far as I know.

Today I took more snow geese flight pics and the background came out really sharp lol. However it was a different type of day altogether, so guess that explains it. Plus I was facing north today, whereas in this image, was facing south west.

my pleasure Lorraine, happy you found it interesting. Learned quite a bit myself too, - think I did know parts of it years ago, but needed to refresh my memory. It was a surprise to read how high they fly tho' as wasn't aware of that. Am going to re read the Snow Goose book, am sure I bought a copy ages ago, so it must be around here "someplace" :)

thankyou Lorraine, happy you like it. You might have heard of the book "The Snow Goose" by Paul Gallico. We had to read that book in English class at high school. I recall enjoying it & should re read it.

Believe they get their name as they come here from the Western Canadian Arctic to overwinter each year. They feed here and build up reserves to enable them to migrate back to their nesting grounds in the Arctic and to Russia's Wrangel Island & Northern Alaska. Our area, - the Fraser River Delta, is one of the first large estuaries & is one of the first areas where the snow leaves the farm fields, where the snow geese feed when they first reach here from their journey from the Artic etc. They fly at heights between 750 ft and 3500 feet during their migration, & it takes them 10-11 weeks to reach their nesting sites. When they are overwintering here, they find their mates during their 2nd winter here, but they mate in their 3rd winter. They leave this area in late February or early March to return to their nesting areas, and they find the same place where they were born. Probably more than you wanted to know, but I learned something myself too :)
