Hey, I'm sorry I named my image Cottonmouth also! Nice shot, under the chin its so colorful!

Ever see one of these swim with its head above the water? My friend chased one in a flooded tractor ditch to get a photos, we both were wearing hip waders.

Unreal image of this nasty fellow!

Keith - very good shot. I have a kayak - I'm always afraid if I took a pistol with me, and one fell into my kayak, it would be full of holes! Bloody irascible

serpents, they are.

When Patches and I walked the other day with my wife Mary we saw one of these. The last thing on my mind was to get a picture of it.

Great shot and congratulations on your braveness to take such a shot.

One thing that makes a photographer stand out is the ability to get shots that others don't. This is an amazing shot!

I live in a very snaky environment, too. A 5' male eastern diamondback was killed in the road around the corner. Great shot. Textbook. I hope you were wearing shoes! I have a pair of snakebite-proof boots in the closet, and I go barefoot most of the time. Ex-husband nailed by a pigmy rattler two years ago. It was a dry bite. No envenomation. Look up Steve Grenard's venom-L list. Great stuff on there.

Pretty common sight in Texas. Great that you caught its mouth open to show how it got it's name.

I once lived in Louisiana, right next to the Mississippi River. We saw plenty of these guys. Very nice shot.

Thanks Brian & Zoya for the comments!

I have a 70-300mm lens for such things as this - but I was within 6 feet of this guy still...

Yes this is a very venomous snake - it is in the water moccasin line, these snakes have been known to chase people - in this case he just wanted to be left alone

Excellent snake close-up. I was aiming for something like this with my snake shots, but I couldn't get the snake to cooperate. Is this one poisonous?
